"If history could teach us anything, it would be that private property is inextricably linked with civilization." - Ludwig von Mises
On this episode, Acton’s director of program and education, Dan Churchwell, interviews Dr. Jeffery Degner following his participation in an Acton Lecture Series panel discussion. They talk about themes such as the importance of family as an ideal for community health, the overlooked importance of fatherhood, and how economic factors such as inflation shape the incentive families face.
Dr. Jeffery Degner, economist at Cornerstone University and fellow at The Mises Institute, about the impact of inflation on American society. He explains how inflation is the artificial expansion of the money supply and is controlled by the Federal Reserve. This leads to higher prices and the business cycle but benefits the wealthiest asset holders. He describes the United States as having an ‘inflation culture’ and explains how inflation hurts families, working people, and the poor. We explore how it has led to cultural degeneracy, a reliance on debt and credit, rampant consumerism, and other social evils. We discuss the impact of inflation on the church and why Christians should take this issue seriously.
Bob Murphy talks with economist Jeff Degner about his new book Inflation and the Family. Drawing inspiration from Guido Hülsmann’s The Ethics of Money Production, Professor Degner shows how central bank policies and interest rate manipulation create ripple effects beyond prices and GDP. From marriage formation to fertility decisions and divorce trends, he explains how inflation fosters short-termism, debt culture, and moral hazard within households.
